In the modern Louvre of Paris, you can find, amidst a collection of other French sculptures, a 2.12 meter-tall marble statue of Spartacus, naked, broken chains hanging from his wrists, his eyes showing both a pensive serenity and a cold aggression. The piece was sculpted by Denis Foyatier in 1830, as an addition to l’allee des grands homes (the Avenue of Great Men) in the Jardin des Tuileries. It was moved to the Louvre in 1877. You may have heard the name Spartacus before, as he has long been a symbol of the fight against repression. In a nutshell, he was a soldier turned gladiator turned runaway slave that fought Rome as leader of a massive slave army. But who really was he? What kind of life did he live? What do we know of his origins? Those are some questions that will be answered in this book.

I purchased the paperback version. The cover of the book indicates it was written by James Wheaton, but the first page states: "By Patrick Kelly."The book provides an interesting and easily approached version of Spartacus with some historical contextualization and reference; but in no way is it scholarly. Also, it is not polished writing and includes many grammatical and spelling mistakes, almost like a poor translation. One noteworthy example is found on page 12: "...he may have come from a nation that depended on live stalk for food."
An enjoyable quick read, but sloppy. So, part of my enjoyment came from searching for the editing mishaps.

Good book
This book is a rip off. It doesn't have many pages and the font is large. This information I could have found online and read within minutes. Very disappointed.
If you are wanting for a detailed account of the Third Servile War, you are better of with Srauss' "The Spartacus War." This is not by any means terrible, but I am half way through and have noted several typos which does not inspire confidence as to its accuracy. It's an easy read which will leave more informed about the true nature of the man we know as Spartacus, but if you are truly interested in understanding the conflict look elsewhere
Another quite nice history of Spartacus based on the same feeble sources. Without his me moires turning up it's hard to see what more can happen.
There were too many errors for it to be a great read. Needs to be thoroughly looked over and edited. Also fact checked.
This felt like a padded freshmen history paper - citing the Encyclopedia Brittanica? Couldn't you at least have run it past a spell checker? Granted the subject matter doesnt have many references, but I felt that I didn't pick up too many new facts. At least I can look into that other book you referred to several times.
He fails to mention many key facts including that it's not known if Spartacus actually died in the last battle. Also he fails to take in account military strategy and tactics when reaching his "conclusions. He also barely mentions theories that oppose his own. He states all rebel slaves were caught while failing to state that Crassus and Pompeii had motive to state this because it would gain them prestige. He essentially uses one source throughout the book for facts. I'd recommend another book if you want to learn more about Spartacus than this.
